Hear Goff's Poem:

Caerleon, a town which has inspired writers over the centuries - Geoffrey of Monmouth, Thomas Malory, Lord Tennyson and Arthur Machen to name but a few – aims to motivate writers once again by holding Wales’ first English language comic verse competition.

Caerleon Festival 2012 will be held in July and the ten best entrants will be invited to read their work at a live event during the Festival. Three substantial cash prizes will be awarded.

Goff Morgan

The launch of the competition was proclaimed outside the National Roman Legion Museum in Caerleon High Street by Goff Morgan, known as Newport's Town Poet and a member of the competition’s steering group. Wearing a toga he read a specially prepared poem to launch the competition.

He will also eventually compere the final stage of the competition in Caerleon on July 8th. The Judging Panel will consist of: Mab Jones, Cardiff-born poet, comic, writer, and performer; Siriol Jenkins, Actress and comedian; Paul Flynn, Enthusiastic Blogger, Tweeter, Speaker, Author and Member of Parliament for Newport West; Peter Manley, Teacher of Languages, Literacy and Liberal Studies - always seeking to inspire confidence, creativity and enterprise in communication; and Roy Noble OBE, Radio & TV Broadcaster, winner of the Sony Award for listener figures and The Royal Television Society Award as Regional presenter of the year. (more detail here)

The competition is open to all writers over the age of 18 who are living, working or studying in Wales during 2012. The work will need to be previously unpublished, humorous and of poetic merit. The winners will also be judged on their performance when they read their poems.

Full details and an application form can be downloaded above. Applicants can also write to: Comic Verse Competition, 27 Hawthorn Gardens, Caerleon NP18 1NX or phone 01633 431242

Goff Morgan says:
“Comic verse has a long pedigree, from the verse plays of Aristophanes, through Chaucer, Swift and Pope, WS Gilbert and Hilaire Belloc to Roger McGough, Pam Ayres and the current Poet Laureate Carol Anne Duffy.

“During the nineteenth century the writing of humour in all forms came to be frowned upon as ‘not serious’. To some extent this attitude persists to this day, and I hope that our competition will in some way help to redress the balance."

Caerleon Festival chairman Tim Davidson says:
“This is a national all-Wales competition and we anticipate being inundated by a wave of Welsh wit and wisdom. Not only will any budding Edward Lears from Wales have the opportunity to perform at the Caerleon Festival, they will also have the chance to win substantial cash prizes - yes poems mean prizes!

Comic verse is an important part of our literary heritage and the competition will complement literary events already planned for the summer festival - talks and performances by established writers and poets”.
