Sunday 7 March - Jackie Oates will be appearing at Llanhennock Village Hall (7.30 for 8.15pm start). Tickets £8. Please click here for Jackie's website.

Jackie Oates

Jackie Oates, who has won a string of awards despite being a relative newcomer to the British folk scene, will be entertaining folk enthusiasts on behalf of Caerleon Arts Festival on Sunday March 7th at Llanhennock Village Hall.

Jackie is a singer and fiddle player hailing from Staffordshire. Her unique treatment of English ballads and songs and pure, haunting singing style has attracted increasing attention. Jackie was chosen to perform at a special English folk showcase, titled ‘Looking For A New England’, at South-By-South-West music conference in Austin Texas this March. She is also performing in New York with the showcase line up, three days before her Texas show.

Since appearing as a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards 2003, she has performed extensively at festivals and folk clubs across the country, in a solo capacity and with a number of bands. She was a founder member of Northumbrian group and Mercury nominated Rachel Unthank and the Winterset until early 2007, and has since guested with Van Eyken, the Reg Meuross Band and Show of Hands.

This year she was nominated for three BBC folk awards- Folk Singer of The Year, Album of the Year and Best Traditional Track for ‘Isle Of France’.

The end of 2009 saw her album Hyperboreans receive a nomination for the fRoots Critics’ Poll Album of the Year and reach number 5 on the Mojo Folk Album of the Year Chart.  The album has also been released across Europe, Australia, Japan and South Africa in November 2009. Produced by her brother Jim Moray and featuring a title track written for her by Alasdair Roberts, it sizzles with a new confidence and maturity. On March 15th 2010 One Little Indian Records will release a second single from Hyperboreans.

She will be playing at a Caerleon Arts Festival fund raising concert on Sunday March 7th at Llanhennock Village Hall with the support of the Arts Council for Wales. Tickets £8 from Caerleon Tourist Information Centre 01633 422656 or Rafi Goldsmith, Ffwrwm 01633 430271 - 7.30pm for 8.15pm start. There will be a bar.

Tueday 30 March "Breabach" Caerleon Comprehensive School (7.30 for 8.30pm start) Tickets£8. Please click here for Breabach's website.

Breabach

Breabach

Breabach are one of the most inventive and diverse bands to have emerged from the Scottish folk scene in recent years. From their foot-stomping reels to their heartwarming delivery of songs, there can be no doubt why Breabach has become a household name for many on the folk and roots music scene.

Nominated in the Scots Trad Music Awards for ‘Best Up and Coming Artist’ in 2006 and ‘Best Folk Band’ in 2007 and 2008, Breabach’s huge sound is dominated by the twin Bagpipes of Calum MacCrimmon and Donal Brown. This uncompromising force is complemented by the extraordinary fiddle playing of Patsy Reid and is further supported by the charismatic yet propulsive guitar playing of Ewan Robertson, named BBC Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2008.

As one of the most versatile outfits to grace the folk scene, Breabach never fail to impress their audience with their collective charm and talents. Ewan Roberston and Patsy Reid share the vocal duties whilst multi-instrumentalists Calum MacCrimmon and Donal Brown alternate between pipes, flute, whistle, bouzouki and step-dance. One by one, these musical gems are unleashed like musical artillery, and to breathtaking effect.

Salsa Celtica at Cwrt Bleddyn Hotel & Spa

Salsa Celtica 2

"Not your average salseros, not to be missed" L.A. Times, USA
"This unique group is a dynamic force on the world music scene" Songlines

Salsa Celtica's synthesis of Scottish and Irish traditional music with all the Latin American elements of salsa has taken them and their music all over the world. In the last ten years the group has been a hit equally at major Celtic, jazz, world music and salsa festivals. Their albums have topped the New York and L.A. salsa charts and European world music charts, the band has been nominated for folk music awards and appeared as themselves in a feature film.

Their lineup combines some of Scotland and Ireland's most exciting traditional musicians mixed with a stellar group of world, jazz and salsa musicians from the U.K. and Latin America.  Salsa Celtica is a stunning combination of virtuosity and energy, making them one of the most exciting groups on the world music circuit today. Started in Edinburgh and Glasgow in 1996 Salsa Celtica has gone on to invent their own genre and then take it around the world and back again to critical and public acclaim. The group has released four studio albums, most recently "El Camino" also to critical and public acclaim.

Salsa Celtica hit the road again in spring 2010, playing the well-loved music from their last four studio albums, but also with new material which will feature folkloric musical influences from Afro-Cuban rumba to Scots Gaelic vocals.

2010 will also see the release of a brand new live album from Salsa Celtica which will be available at spring 2010 tour dates.
