Above, visitors enjoy a performance by the Jawahir dancers on Saturday July 14, one of a number of free entertainments on the field. Right: the opening ceremony on July 6. Pictured here are the opening speaker, Prof. Anne Carlisle, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of University of Wales, Newport, with Rosemary Butler AM (festival patron) and Celf Caerleon Arts chairman Tim Davidson. Rosemary Butler, who is Deputy Presiding Officer of the Welsh Assembly, presented a trophy to the winners of the very first Festival Composing Competition for Schools, children of Malpas Church in Wales Junior School (below right). The children composed a piece of music on this year's festival theme, the River Usk, and were awarded the Festival Composer of the Year 2007 trophy for their musical description of the journey of the river from source to sea. Mrs Butler had earlier presented the Festival's school art awards at a gathering of parents and children at the Celtic Manor Resort on July 6 (below). Photos © James A Sullivan 2007. |
