The artists have been encouraged to interpret the theme as widely as possible. There will be about 30 carvings in Caerleon on July 11th, 12th and 13th and a number of them will use other materials besides wood.

As well as the larger sculptures, Caerleon Arts Festival will also play host this year to " This Precious Earth" - a travelling exhibition of carvings celebrating what is good about life on earth.  The title of the exhibition was announced to the British Woodcarvers Association in April 2006 to allow time for individual carvers to create new pieces which fitted in with the theme. Scenes of NatureScenes of Nature - Janette Stewart

Each carving is accompanied by a brief explanation of the inspiration behind it. There will be demonstrations as well, and some work will be for sale.

2008 Festival - helping to save the planet

Caerleon Arts Festival 2008 (July 5th - 13th) will look different, sound different and feel different. We'll still invite a limited number of wood sculptors, but we also want to do something new.

We currently have a backlog of wood sculptures which need siting and maintaining and we are putting considerable effort into clearing that backlog. So our emphasis in the coming year will be less on wood, more on something else. Once next year is over we plan to revert to our more traditional format.

In 2008 waste will be the key word - and we're not talking rubbish! Recyclable material - a very different thing - will provide the raw ingredients. We had one successful venture this year with Recycled Ronnie the Pirate - who emerged from a pile of paper, bottles and plastic to become the handsome chap he is.

We're already talking to professional artists and academics who specialise in this field. We want to spread the message that art and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

Semi-completed sculptures could be brought to the field for final assembly during the main weekend of the Festival - July 11th, 12th and 13th. Artists who are interested in taking part are invited to ring 01633 421103 or e-mail caer.leon@yahoo.co.uk

We are also planning other activities including visual arts of various kinds, craft stalls, workshops, music, drama and dance over the period of the Festival. We start on July 5th when the opening will coincide with our annual school art presentations.
